The Position

ASBURY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY announces a faculty position in Christian Education/Discipleship, on its Wilmore Campus, commencing July 2011. Asbury Theological Seminary is a confessional seminary in the Wesleyan tradition, and enthusiastic agreement with the Seminary’s confessional and ethos statements is essential. The initial appointment is for three years, renewable, tenure-track. Rank is open. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Consonant with the Seminary’s commitment to distance learning, the person hired in this position will be expected to offer at least one course per year in the Extended Learning Program.  Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. (or equivalent, terminal academic) degree in a field appropriate to graduate-level instruction in Christian Education or in other related fields.

Qualifications:

  • A strong personal faith in Jesus Christ, mature Christian character, and active involvement in one’s congregational and broader church life;
  • Of Wesleyan heritage;
  • Full agreement with and embrace of the confessional and ethos statements of Asbury Theological Seminary;
  • Theological training at the graduate level;
  • Local church and or parachurch experience in discpleship ministries required;
  • Preference given to those with education/experience in children’s ministry and the spirituality of children;
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural and/or international experience/competence or a strong desire to become involved in these areas;
  • Education, experience, and ability in one or more of the following area:
    • Missional Christian discipleship in a changing world
    • Wesleyan discipleship
    • Small groups
    • Curriculum theory and development
    • Administration;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness or promise as a classroom teacher;
  • A commitment to invest in the formation of students;
  • Demonstrated ability or promise with regard to collegial relations and contribution as a member of a theological faculty;
  • Demonstrated scholarship ability, as represented in academic publications and/or active participation in scholarly societies, or evidence of capacity and commitment to make a scholarly contribution within one’s field;
  • Willingness to receive training in distance-learning technology and participate fully in the School’s Extended Learning Program;

Asbury Theological Seminary

Asbury Theological Seminary was founded in 1923 to meet the need for a graduate theological seminary committed to the historic Wesleyan interpretation of evangelical Christianity. It “is a community called to prepare theologically educated, sanctified, Spirit-filled men and women to evangelize and spread scriptural holiness throughout the world through the love of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and to the glory of God the Father.”

The Asbury Theological Seminary community consists of five schools: the School of Biblical Interpretation & Proclamation; the E. Stanley Jones School of World Mission and Evangelism; the School of Practical Theology; the School of Urban Ministry; and the School of Theology & Formation. The Seminary also contains the Beeson International Center for Biblical Preaching and Church Leadership. Asbury is one seminary on three campuses– Wilmore, Kentucky; Virtual; and Orlando, Florida – and houses one of the largest M.Div. degree programs in the country as well as a number of M.A. degrees and doctoral programs. The Seminary currently has some 65 regular members of the Faculty, and enrolls some 1,600 students.

Department of Christian Education and Youth Ministry

The person who fills the position described in this announcement will become a member of the Department of Christian Education and Youth Ministry that is one of three instructional areas within the School of Practical Theology.  Department faculty members contribute centrally to core requirements within the Master of Arts in Christian Education and Master of Arts in Youth Ministry degree programs and provide courses for students within the Master of Divinity and other Master of Arts degrees who desire elective courses in Christian education or youth ministries.  The faculty of the Department of Christian Education and Youth Ministry include:
